What to Expect During Your Car’s Radiator Servicing

The radiator is responsible for keeping a vehicle's engine under normal temperature. It cools the coolant as it draws excess heat from the engine when the car is running. A functioning radiator is essential to keep the vehicle from overheating. A faulty radiator not only damages your engine and other components, but it also affects the car's air conditioning. If you suspect your radiator or cooling system is struggling, it may be time to service it. What exactly goes on during a radiator service?

Inspection of the cooling system

The cooling system should undergo a visual inspection to identify any potential faults that could cause failure of radiator components and subsequent overheating of the engine. The visual check encompasses the following:

•    Checking the thermostat for any mechanical defects. The thermostat allows the flow of coolant into the radiator.

•    Inspecting radiator pipes for any damage or wear that could result in coolant leaks.

•    Inspecting the radiator for any rust, scales, and leaks.

Repair and replacement

Any components that show signs of wear or potential damage such as the thermostat and radiator pipes should be replaced to ensure efficient performance of the engine. In fact, the radiator pipes should also be replaced routinely during every service even if they are not damaged to prevent leaks further down the road. A leaking radiator can be successfully repaired; however, this process can prove cumbersome. Your service dealership may advise you to have it replaced for improved performance.

Flushing the cooling system

Flushing of the cooling system is a procedure that involves adding a cleaner to the cooling system. Flushing is different from radiator draining. During radiator draining, only a proportion of the anti-freeze liquid is drained from the system.  This means that new anti-freeze will mix with the old. Flushing has the following benefits to your vehicle's cooling system:

•    It flushes out all the old anti-freeze and gets rid of sediments and any other contaminants that might have made their way into the system.

•    It removes rust and scale deposits that build up inside the radiator over time. Rust can cause overheating or even damage the radiator.

•    The additives in the cleaner lubricate the water pump, making it more durable.

•    The new anti-freeze has additives that prevent the formation of rust and scale inside the radiator.

After flushing, new and clean fluid is added into the cooling system. Flushing during every service can extend the life of your cooling system and prevent engine overheating.

Radiator servicing is a procedure that every vehicle owner should consider regularly. It can save you costly repairs and replacement of car parts as a result of damage due to failed components in the cooling system.
